Shapiro, Lamed
(1878-1948)
   Polish Yiddish short-story writer. He was born in Rzhischev, in the district of Kiev. He lived in Warsaw, where he came under the influence of Isaac Leib Peretz. In 1906 he went to the US, but he returned to Warsaw and worked for the Yiddish newspaper Der fraynd. Later he settled in Zurich, and finally in the US. He wrote stories about Eastern European pogroms and Jewish life in New York; he also published a study of Yiddish literature and language.
